Citizen Journalist: the Camera Phone Revolution

The advent of embedded cameras in cell phones is creating a worldwide explosion of more people taking more photos. We expect that by 2006 there will be 60 million cameraphones deployed! 1 and 2 megapixel cameraphones are just around the corner, and TCP/IP transmission are proving that citizens armed with cameraphones can instantly become reporters and/or publishers.
Many believe these new mobile publishing tools will eventually bring big changes to journalism and other industries, and this session will show what’s happening now, while extrapolating into what’s anticipated in the very near future.

HDR Capture Processing and Display
Greg Ward
High Dynamic Range digital imaging technology is on the horizon, and when full support arrives, it will change how we capture, edit, store, and display images forever.
Greg Ward is a leader in the HDR space, and most recently, he has been involved with High Dynamic Range Display technology, which uses new display techniques to show colors 30 times as bright and ten times as dark as current displays. Greg will discuss HDR issues, technology,and directions with a focus on what tools and standards are emerging for HDR to become a workflow reality.

Innovations in Display Technology

New developments in LCD and other display technologies including HDR, wider color gamut, cinema projectors and unique display architectures like flexible screens and retinal projectors could revolutionize the way we work, play, and watch movies. Some experts have claimed the enhancements could be even more important than the conversion from B/W to color that took the computer industry by storm in the late ’80s. What’s coming, what does it mean, and how long do we have to wait? Our panel will touch on High Gamut LCD, DLP (DMD), GLV, High Gamut CRT and OLED and calibrated color technologies.

Young Guns:Visual Effects for Film and Television
J. Bills, Doug Bloom, John Han, John McIntosh
Creating visual effects is a team effort between programmers, animators, artists and compositors. The difference between production requirements and deadlines for visual effects for broadcast and feature films is dramatic.
John Han is the 3D Technical Director at EntityFX where he oversees all 3D work for the WB series Smallville. John will discuss the weekly production challenges and his integration of Adobe AfterEffects into a pipeline dominated by discreet Infernos and Flame workstations.
We will have a behind the scenes look at the effects created for Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King which dominated the Academy Awards by weaving a fantastic tale with stunning visual effects. J. Bills will discuss the pivotal role of compositors in merging, masking and computer graphic elements, animations with live action footage.

The Secrets of Camera RAW
Russell Brown, Tom Knoll, Jeff Schewe
Mastery of this newly built-in component of Photoshop CS is a requirement for any digital imager who takes the quality of their photos seriously.This session focuses on how to best leverage the components of Camera RAW that may not be immediately apparent to the casual or new user. Learn how to delve into the depths of this essential tool with the experts who created it.

Digital Soapbox
Everyone and anyone
Every Sunday in London’s Hyde Park anyone with a view to voice can stand on a soapbox, and hold forth on whatever subject they like. The Digital Soapbox is your opportunity to voice your concerns, questions, and opinions on the topics presented during the day.
